Do you travel with rollup shades up or down

What is your reasoning. We can't seem to get a good answer. We were told to roll shades up before traveling, but didn't get a good answer why.
Can you help?

In my unit - the small shades are ok to travel in the down position. They have always worked great. However the two large shades in my unit (dining table shade and the rear window shade) - I think I need to add more bracket clips across the top for more support. The end brackets for my rear window shade bowed out/bent and the shade would not stay attached. The rear end bounces like crazy. When the shade there seemed to be more force put on the end brackets and the shade was down every time. I fixed it (temporarily) by stuffing some blocks of foam between the valence and the shade hardware ends. This prevents the shade from bouncing or moving out of the brackets. The permanent fix is to add more supports across the top and new end brackets. Irvine Shade would probably send them to me if I asked…it’s on the list lol things to do.

The issue with my dining table shade was the internal shade spring broke/lost tension. It would not go up on its own and I had to manually roll it up. Irvine Shade sent me new guts for both shades which I installed. They work better - not perfect. Installing these springs on a big shade is a two man job. The videos on Irvine shade website are accurate for a tiny little shade but the big shades are floppy and very difficult to handle by yourself.

I pull shades down for storage.

I used to put them down on travel days and find that half of them are up after travelling anyway, so I usually put them up when travelling now to prevent them snapping up during travel. When the rig is stored, I put them down to keep the sun off the interior "wood work".

Up when traveling. Everything in the camper is secured as much as humanly possible to keep things from moving, banging, or getting broken in transit. Why would I keep the shades down so they can move around, bang around, and possibly get damaged. The way things move around and bounce around when in transit, why risk something else breaking?

My answer is it depends: If traveling on extremely hot sunny days will keep then down to try eliminate some of the sun heat. On cooler cloudy days shades up.

Travel with them down to help control heat.

Do not believe it makes a difference up or down, the weight on the attachments will be the same.

I was instructed by a Keystone Rep to travel with the larger shades up, they will travel better. That was after the larger shade in the bedroom behind the bed and shade behind the sofa in our 2020 Montana 3121 RL both broke. I had to get parts from Keystone and fix myself since it was going to take a life time to get it done at the dealer. Had to take the entire valance apart to get the new shades in place, no easy task. I now travel with all shades up just to be safe!!! Just my opinion of course. Enjoy your rig and remember to have fun and be safe out there amongst them!!!!

This is an interesting post. Thanks to the OP for starting the discussion.

We have always traveled with our shades down unless it was cold outside and we wanted the sun to warm the trailer. Been doing this for 19 years originally departing from El Paso and now San Antonio. But that wasn't with roller shades that came on our 2022!! We've got one small one that is already not working correctly and our large shade in the rear of the trailer actually won't stay down because the bouncing back there is too much for the spring and catch. So glad to learn from others. We will have to reconsider our approach. I'm not sure I want to have to replace brackets (or shades) because of the possible wear and tear. But, we have to weigh in the heat gain from leaving them down. Hmmm...

Irvine Shade has always been very helpful with my issues - even way out of warranty. Contact them. Describe the issue. She will tell you what to measure or take a photo to send via email.

I have Ascot single slow rise roller shades on 2017 High Country. Had two replaced on warranty due to self rollers breaking. YES we did sometimes travel with them down. Also had two come loose pulling screws from wall.
When three more self rollers quit I got Ascot to send me 6 repair kits so I had spares and easily repaired those broken 3.
I have since always raised shades to relieve any unnecessary strain in hangers or open shades bouncing against windows. I CANNOT SAY if this helps or hurts but IMHO it is the precaution I have started in hopes of preventing any additional issues.

Ditto this. I do prefer for them to be up…I just think they ride better that way. It might also depend on which shades you’ve got. Ours are the simple roll-up shades and they seem to ride OK when down on those hot, sunny days.

Up, them rolling up at lightening speed damages more shades than ya know and they arent cheap to replace if yours are double shades like mine are.

We were told by dealer down. And have been traveling with them down. At storage time we usually leave slides in and have no access to half of the shades to pull down to keep rig cooler.

I’ve never really thought about it, but they’re usually down.mainly because I’ve never thought to put them up.

We travel with them down in hot weather. Sometimes some are up when we stop, but they rise slowly when released so they don't snap up. However, on the trip back from MORryde after the IS install they did stay down, we'll see if that continues to be the case.

We've also found that only keeping the blackout shades down keeps the rig cooler than having the dayshades down behind them. No scientific data to support our findings - just seems like it helps.
