Ideas to cover middle roof vent hole for a week or two?

Need to cover the 14x14 middle AC/vent fan hole for a week or two without screws.

Backstory:

FedEx Ground damaged 2 new Coleman Mach 3 PS units (drivers had them on their side while transporting and the compressor weight bent up the bottom pans). UnitedRV.com was great, but they aren't willing to ship a 3rd unit and I don't blame them 1 bit! I need to return the first unit (installed w/o opening the cover) and source a unit that i can pickup and inspect (before purchase). I don't want to screw the old fan back into place since I've cleaned the area and coveredall the holes with Eternabond tape. Not sure if some sort of plastic panel and tape (Gorilla, Duck, Duct or foil) wouod hold up to a bad t-storm or not. Sure don't want to learn the hard way.

Anybody done this?

I would just buy a roof vent assembly and mount it until you get the air issue taken care of then keep the roof vent to future replace any of the other ones that might break or wear out.

That is exactly what I would do.

I have the OEM roof vent, just don't want to screw it back down (screws would penetrate the Eternabond that covered the original screw holes). Taping the vent down would have a few inches of profile to catch a strong wind.

You could cut a piece of plywood larger than the hole, tightly wrap it in a garbage bag, and tape it down to the roof. It should hold for a couple weeks without risk of catching heavier winds.

Jeff,

Good idea, might have those parts in inventory. I wonder what tape would adhere to the roof but not actually damage it when removed?

Hmm...not sure. I've never tried to remove Eternabond tape. Is it doable?

Jeff,
Based on the glowing reviews I don't think I want to try removing it. Picking up some 3" gorilla tape and 2 pieces of white coroplast sign board (should be easy to conform to the slight curvature of the roof).

That should keep the rain out for a couple weeks. Go slowly when pulling that Gorilla Tape back up. It's grabs pretty good too.

Roger that!

Thanks all - for better or worse I now have a plan. Now to find an AC unit that I can buy over the counter.

3'x3' piece of plywood,
15' of closed cell styrofoam coil
Liquid nail glue
3' 2x4
Long screws or carrage bolts

Glue the styrofoam to the plywood around the perimeter.
Lay it over the hole styrofoam down.
Have a helper hold the 2x4 over the center of the hole on the inside.
Use long screws and washers (or carrage bolts which ever reaches long enough). Drive the screws through the plywood into the 2x4 to hold it down to the roof.
Tighten the screws into the 2x4 enough to compress the styrofoam just enough to make it water tight.
Do not over tighten.

Ok, this would have been the winner if I hadn't completely sealed and insulated the 14x14 hole and didn't need to leave the control boxes up above the plenum trim. The plenum trim has to stay up to support the 2 control boxes that are completely wired up.

I had considered a similar though compressed by 2 - 4" solid concrete blocks. The thought of the blocks somehow hitting TPO scared the idea out of me. We used to put TPO on our warehouse roofs and it was many times heavier and still a PITA with leaks every time some HVAC mechanic was on the roof. Went back to good old fashioned 5 ply built-up roofing with 25 warranty on every building, much more $$ but it lasts.

May wind up implementing this idea if the stuff i just bought from HD doesn't hold up. Even if I have to take the control boxes down.

Now if only I can find the unit to buy...

Ok I'm going to go full on redneck here.....no offense to my fellow RN's You could cover the hole with a small piece of plywood, get a tarp and cut it narrow like 12' long by 4' wide and just use duct tape? The tape should should hold for a week or two and not be that hard to remove. I got all that in inventory.

Many years ago hail busted out all 3 of the ceiling vents on my previous travel trailer. And yes, it rained.

For a temporary fix, I just laid strip after strip after strip of Duck Tape across the opening overlapping itself until I made a complete cover. I did not run the tap on the roof, I used the sides of the existing aluminum frame from the vent covers and taped to it. It worked well. We had several more rains before I was able to get replacements and everything stayed dry inside. To remove, I simply pulled the tape off and it was ready to install the new covers. Easy Peasy. But a little time consuming and about 3 rolls of Duck Tape.

Thanks everyone! Hole is covered but damaged new unit still sitting on the roof, my back is in the crapper so trying to figure a way to get the unit down to ship it out, I'd get someone to throw it off the roof, maybe as the FedEx truck rolls by but that would cost me $$$$

Ain't RV life grand!?!

PS - back injury was a slip in the community pool last week, but not helped by bending over to tape up the roof vent hole cover.

Glad you got the hole covered. Sorry for the back injury. Just for the record I would have thrown it off the roof.

Yep, would have felt good (except the whole back thing) but would have cost me $1,100. The unit has to go back to the UnitedRV so they can get their claim from FedEx... or FUp as I now call them.
