maintaining the wheel bearings
I looked and looked by doing a search, but couldn't find anything on lubing the wheel bearings. We are getting ready to move back North for the summer after sitting for six months. I am finishing all of the pre move maintenance and I would like to know about lubing the wheel bearings.
Thanks

Hi Gary,
Here is Dexters web site on EZ lube axles.
Pull the rubber dust cap off and give them a couple of pumps of grease.
Don't put too much in or you will push the seals out.

Re the How" and also "When", look in your Dexter Axle Owner's Manual...should be part of all that "stuff" they gave you when you took delivery. The "How" should be there, as well as on the web site. As far as "When", my Al-Ko Manual says every 6 months or 6000 miles, whichever comes first.

I repack my wheel bearings at least one time each year. Try to do two but don't always manage that. Usually put a couple of squirts of grease in the zerk two or three times per year. As noted above..... don't pump too much grease in or you'll blow out the seal.

I agree with you'all, i tried it myself as a newby after the local r.v. dealer,EMERALD COAST, NAVARRE, FLORIDA, wanted to charge me $130 per axle plus taxes.Just to grease 4 nipples which took me all of 20 minuites. Ditch the dealers and do it yourself if you dare, no doubt the good folks on this forum will guide you.

RonS,
The process is the same as with a regular wheel. Have you done repacking before?

Be sure you don't use too much grease with those E-Z lube hubs. I did and had grease all over the drums and linings. "If one squirt is good, two must be better." I'm an old farm boy and we always put in a little extra grease from the grease gun -- always "one more squirt." I'm joking, of course, but you surely don't want to over grease. When I had my axles replaced with Mor-Rydes, I asked about the E-Z lubes and the Dexter Rep who was there in Elkhart, IN said that Dexter didn't recommend the E-Z lubes because of the very problem that I just described. I'm now using my dealer to repack the bearings annually as well as brake adjustments.
Some of the younger guys on this forum may want to do the work themselves, but not me.

Easiest thing I ever did. Took me all of five minutes. I did put two squirts of grease into each zerk. Hopefully it doesn't hurt anything.

We have our berings packed every year with Campers World in FL when were down there. The charge is 129.00. I won't get my hands dirty for that price. I do pump a couple of shots during the summer if we use the RV for long distances. They repacked the bearings, and replaced all of the grease seals. This is the second montana and the 4th year to use campers World and well satisfied with them.

I had my bearings checked this spring. This is my 3rd season on them and they took 1 squirt of grease in each. The shop said they look good and nothing more is needed.

Two squirts per year, whether weekending or fulltiming. I didn't believe my dealer and did two squirts twice in a year. Next year he checked the brakes and told me I put in too much grease. He reiterated two squirts per year. No more. Period. Now I believe him. Ours will be four years old in July and has about 50k miles. The brakes were replaced at the time mentioned above. The linings were at about 1/2 at that time but had heat stress cracks because the controller was set too high. This coming June I have an appt with our dealer to check our brakes again. Two years since the last change and no problems.

We made it north with no problem. We are going to make an appointment to get some warranty work done, so when we go in I will have them check the wheel bearings and the brakes although we have only towed about 3000 miles. PM (Preventative Maintenance) is much cheaper than the alternative
