Other than the tax implications, will the "off road" diesel harm the newer low sulfur diesel engines? I was told it could, but have never been brave enough to try it.

Not that I have heard. The red diesel users may pay a lower tax or no tax at the end of the year, check with your accountant.

Absolutely NO harm will be done. It is the EXACT same fuel but they add a tiny bit of red dye to indicate the highway taxes were not charged.

If you fuel up at the Truck Stops and have a card that will start the Pump, like the EFS/TSD card, you have to walk through a series of menu items one of which is type of fuel, Tractor or Reffer for the Motor on the trailer running the cooling unit. My understanding is that the Reffer Fuel is lower priced as it's non-highway use.
Maybe we'll have some long time Trucker correct me if I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

Did that never had any engine problems except for the fuel injectors on my 2003 Ford F-350. Ford converted the engine to diesel and was always changing the fuel injectors, and not because of the small amount of gas.
Sorry you didn’t know about that at the time
I disagree, maybe with older diesel engines, but I'm not willing to take that chance on a $80,000 truck that is my only vehicle and I have to depend on 24/7. The 40 year experienced diesel mechanic explained to me the costly possibilities of what could happen over a period time. I did my research and he was spot on.

Reminds me of the Dirty Harry question: "Do you feel lucky"
I'm not willing to risk it, but most of my fill ups are at the Truck Stops, no gas at those islands.

Fill up on your Def while you are there. Generally at the same pump stand. BLUE nozzle, BLUE. Remember not to put in your fuel tank, lol. No telling what the repair charge would be for that mistake???

Thanks, Michelle and Ann. I have seen the question about Tractor vs Refer and was wondering why it wanted to know. That actually make sense. I did read somewhere else that not using Low Sulfur Diesel will damage the engine in newer trucks that require it. Probably more sensors and emissions garbage than the engine itself I guess.

I work at a Ford dealership and I can't tell you how common this is. A contamination kit (we call them Catastrophe kits)is upwards of $5000. And that's just for parts. Consider yourself very lucky.

Yes the dealership said it happens quite often, and that ford now has a kit, and that is what they used, but not for $5,000. And yes I'm glad we took immediate action. I call it common sense.

Ag equipment which costs many times more than your truck uses the same ulta-low sulfur fuel as your truck. Only difference is the red dye added to signify non-tax paid. Generally sells 40 to 50 cents cheaper than road taxed fuel.

I PUT RED IN BY MISTAKE one time.. on our way back from Oregon into California, California at the bug station dipped my tank under threat of taking my truck!. It's a beautiful state, but a bad place.

I'm always very leery of that situation. When I pull the handle out I make damn sure that the Diesel button is flashing because yes it would be really bad to put gasoline in.
