P218F engine code 2019 Cummins

I have a 2019 Ram Cummins 3500 SRW with about 75k miles. I've had it in the shop three times for engine code P218F (has to do with flow of DEF). The first time they cleaned the injector. It coded again in less than 25 miles. The second time I took it in for the P218F code they flashed the truck. Said they had found something suggesting that flashing the truck would correct the problem, only it didn't. The third time they replaced the injector (~450 dollars). It coded again within 10 miles. The shop just can't seem to figure out what is going on.

Has anyone out there with ~2109 Cummins experienced this code. If you have can you tell me what was done to correct it. The shop is now talking about changing the pump (~850 dollars). The shop is now in the mode in which they change parts until they accidentally stumble upon the cause. There's got to be a better way.

Ideas anyone?

Have you tried one of the Ram or Cummins forums?

Bummer. I think you have exceeded the emissions warranty on miles but not years.

The emissions are not under warranty. It cost me about ~600 to clean the injector and about 450 to replace the injector. The pump is over 850 and that's the next thing they want to replace.

I'm hoping to learn of another cause for code P218F. Sometimes it seems like today's auto technicians are little more than parts changers. They change parts until the right one is replaced.

I am looking for Cummins forums now. I'm hoping to stumble upon someone that's been down this road.

Thank you for responding

I Googled that code. Here is what I found:

Low fuel pressure caused by a clogged filter, failing fuel pump, failed fuel pressure regulator or clogged or leaking injectors.
A large vacuum leak would cause a massive amount of un-metered air to enter the intake manifold resulting in an overly lean mixture.

Have you replaced the fuel filter. That is the easiest thing to replace.
If you haven’t got some dirty fuel or water the HPFP shouldn’t be bad in 75000 miles. Why did they replace an injector? Was it leaking?

Everything that I've found says that P218F has to do with DEF and not fuel. This is what the mechanic has communicated with me. It indicates that the quantity of DEF that's delivered is not what was commanded.

I've google the hell out of the code and the best thing I've found is this:

https://www.dtcdecode.com/RAM/P218F
The technician has ruled out everything except the pump, or at least that's what I'm being told.

There is a DEF filter that's supposed to be serviced every 100k. However, the pump is supposed to dispense 100ml of DEF in 6 minutes time. The mechanic has tested this flow rate (Ram has defined a test) three times that I know of and every time this flow rate has been perfect (in the exact middle of the expected range). The problem seems like it's intermittent and of very short duration. I've been getting the code for some time, and I've cleared it myself. I've seen it take over 100 miles to code again. I've never seen it re-code very quickly after clearing. Once it went for well over 100 miles. Whatever is broke is not staying broke.
Thank you for your response

I swear I’m not making this up… when my 2018 Cummins threw the code, they inspected the system, found everything was functioning properly, and eventually cured the problem with a software update. Just throwing it out there…

My truck was in the shop four times for this code. The first time they flashed firmware telling me that the flash purposely addressed this code. However, that didn't work for the truck coded again in minutes. They also cleaned the injector, replaced the injector, and replaced the pump.

Replacing the pump cost me 900 and it cleared the code. Cleaning the injector cost nearly 1000.
The mechanic connected to the truck and then shared the data that they were seeing with a factory professional. The factory professional said it was clearly the pump, but the mechanic was unable to reach this diagnosis. It was clearly a guessing game... change parts until we stumble upon the right replacement.
It costs me over 2k to correct this issue. However, they gave away several hours of labor so it could have been much worse.

pump

Isn't the pump on the recall list. I was told the high presser pump was on recall and was being replaced by vin. Maybe another pump.

Hard to believe no warranty coverage. Maybe time for weight loss program.

This is OP. The high pressure fuel pump has the recall. My repair was to the def pump.

On an aside, I had my high pressure fuel pump replaced by a CP3 pump by the dealer. I paid about $4,300 for the repair and Chrysler is going to repay me (I've confirmed this with Chrysler Customer Care). I would have liked doing the recall, but I'm a full timer and I am about to embark on a 3k drive. I want to be confident in the truck. The CP4 pumps have been creating headaches for all three manufacturers for several years. It grenaded a 2011 Duramax resulting in a 12000 repair.

The CP4 is on recall, 2019 is on hold right now until all the 2020s are completed.

DadsHemi is correct. But, if anyone wants to pay 4300 for a CP3 pump, then Chrysler will refund. My service writer told me that he's done a few this way, and the Chrysler rep I spoke to on the phone confirmed it. The recall does an updated CP4, but Bosch has been trying to correct the CP4's problems for some time. The CP3 is a higher volume pump that is thus better lubricated. The CP4 is a little more efficient though.

Ford, Chevy, and Ram all three use a high pressure fuel pump by Bosch called the CP4 pump. This pump comes from Europe where the standards applied to diesel are much stricter than those in the USA. Thus, due to lack of lubrication, these pumps self-destruct sending metal particles throughout the fuel system. The CP4 pumps have been grenading in all three manufactures. One grenaded a 2011 Duramax I had. The estimate for repairs was 12,000-14,000 dollars. This POS nickle and dimed me real bad (actually the repairs were from 100's to over 1000 dollars. The check engine light was on more than it was off. (almost anyway). I also had one Super Duty that was an even bigger POS. The turbo in this truck sounded like a jet engine.

While all three heavy duty diesel manufactures are having serious problems with the CP4, only one has issued a recall (Ram). Ford seems to be having less trouble with it. The Duramax had no lift pump, so the CP4 pump was starved for lubrication. And... my Duramax coded for the DEF system several times costing me well over $1000. Work on these systems is insanely expensive.

DEF systems in the ~2011 trucks were very rushed and not ready for prime time. In 2019 they were still problematic.

Personally, I would ask for a refund for parts and/or labor for the stuff that didn’t fix your truck and wasting your time.

5 year 50k on the emissions and def system covered by Chrysler.. I seen to remember a lot of this MANDATED stuff was covered a lot longer...It seems to me a bad injector will cause black smoke, or a miss.. Before replacing anything I always PROVED THE PART WAS DEFECTIVE.. Otherwise it is very expensive to keep throwing Parts at the problem..Never just replace a part without PROOF that the part is bad..
