2010 ford 6.4 diesel cleans exhaust filter

I recently posted a thread concerning poor fuel economy on a recent trip to Yellowstone NP. I failed to mention that going up there the truck only regen'd once and returning it regen'd 5 times in 1450 miles. The only difference I know of is it was over 100 degrees for most of the return trip. I do add cetane to each tank since you can't buy diesel fuel containing the minimum rating of 45. The FORD folks informed me this would greatly reduce the frequency I would have to tolerate the cleaning exhaust filter message. They also informed me it took up to 4 gallons of diesel fuel to complete the regen/cleaning exhaust filter cycle. Should I expect increase regens when towing?? Thanks

We have used Cetene booster since day one on our 08 6.4L. It was recommended by Ford and a long time diesel mechanic. We do not have frequent regens. We regened twice from Florida 1200 miles and we can not miss a regen as we have external gages that indicate the increase in EGT when in regen. We have regened twice since returning and have traveled over 2K miles. It does take about 20 mins for the regen.

have you talked with ford on what the regen is doing? There may be a an update to the program that they can make to even out the regen. they are always changing throughout the year.

My Dodge does the regen when it needs it. Since adding cetane at each refuel, I have become a firm believer in it. It DOES make a difference in my HP and torque. Mileage... I don't track the difference.

I had a 2010 and just kept it 7 months. I traded it for a 2011 because the fuel mileage was TERRIBLE. I think the best I got pulling the Monty was about 8.5. I might get 16 on the highway empty. I don't know that anything will improve your mileage. In the words of my dealer when I traded it in, "Ford just missed on the 2010's". They got it right on the 2011 6.7. I get 16 around town, 18.5 to 19 ont the highway and 9.5 to 10.5 pulling the 5er at 70mph. Good Luck.

I had a 2010 F350 with the 6.4L and it was a real lemon. Mileage was horrible at best and it would be in the regen cycle anywhere from 50 - 300 miles of travel. The dealer nor Ford could figure out why it would regenerate every couple of hundred miles. Once the truck started shutting down on the highway and Ford was not able to fix that, I traded it for my current 2011 Ram 3500. I have a tad over 54,xxx miles on the Ram and I have only noticed 2 regen cycles. The rest of the time, unless I am watching the fuel economy gauge, I really dont notice the regen.

Generally when my 2010 6.4 does it's "regen" activity, it only lasts a few minutes. Not sure how much diesel fuel it uses, but I can notice the mileage start to head south right after it's finished. Fortunately, it doesn't do it that often and overall, I'm getting around 9.4 mpg. I was going to trade up to the 2012 6.7, but for an extra 1 or 2 mpg, I decided to stick with the 2010.

We average 8.5 when towing and it goes into regen mode about every 150 miles. 08 F350.

When we first got our 08 F-350 6.4L the 'Cleaning exhaust filter"( Regen msg) would stay on display as long as it was in regen. a later flash did away with that and the MSG would only flash on for a few seconds and if you were not looking at the display you would miss it. We have an after market gage that monitors all the trucks parameters EGT included and we always keep the EGT on the display. We can not miss a regen as the EGT will increase by several hundred degrees while in regen. The regen does last 15 or 20 mins. The only time we have noticed a drop in performance is when we are on a steep grade and a hard pull.. We will note a drop in RPM but add a bit of pedal and it will pick back up.We do not get frequent regens but but just about all our driving is with Montana in tow at interstate speeds. We do not keep a clock record of regens but I would say every 500/600 miles when in tow.We had two each way going and coming from Florida 1200 miles one way.

The fuel milage is not great but we weigh in at @ 23K GCWR. Remember these Fords are much heavier than the Dodge and GM trucks and that does not help. 10MPg at the end of a average day is the norm.

If we did not live in Ford Country and can get the huge Employee discounts on the Ford we would no doubt have the GM or Dodge as they all do the job and the other two are much lighter.

My last regen on our way home from Florida was right in the middle of Fancy gap.The engine noise dropped about two octaves, the RPM went way up and the EGT went to over 1400 degrees. We backed off let the EGT's and boost come down a bit and went over Fancy gap at about 35 MPH. MPg when we hit the top said
6.5mpg.

I would also like to know what "later flash" means. Is there a computer "brain" update??

a flash" is a term meaning a update to the trucks on board computer software. They are a common thing,Our -08 6.4 has had several Updates since new. Sometime you are notified via Ford sometimes not. When yo go in-for maint ask the service department if your "flashes" (updates ) are up to date.

I have only noticed my 6.4regen every once in a while..if I did not see it on the dash screen I would not have noticed or realized it was happening...we generally get 9.8 to 10.3 mpg all the time..depends on the terrain, speed etc....we usually travel between55 and 60....we also use the fuel additive from Ford with every fill up...we will get the 45 cetane when we find it but that is hard to find it seems...

Does not seem to be any pattern on when our 2010 goes into regen mode...I am guessing that when the filter is dirty, this info is somehow transmitted to the onboard computer which then starts the regen process. Like others, we can usually see a drop in mpg when this happens. Regarding mileage, we get around 16 mpg around town (combo of highway and stop-n-go travel) and when not towing, as much as 24 mpg on the highway. Our last trip north from FL (around 1800 miles), we got 11.5 mpg. We do not go over 65mph (the speed our tires are rated at)...in fact, we have been keeping the speed under 60 while towing...that has resulted in the mileage numbers we have recorded.

Come to think of it, I had the truck into the dealer in FLA last winter for filter changes, and he said something about updating the computer. That must be what they did. Seems I have not seen the "regen" notice that much since. He did say the mileage should be a little better after that, and he was right. Thanks Rich for letting us know that.

The regen MSG that stayed on the entire time of regen went away with a Update a long time ago.Now it only comes on for a few seconds. If you have a Pyro gage (EGT gage) you can not miss the regen or note the length of the regen as the EGT will be several hundred degrees higher while in regen.
regens will occur more frequently if the truck is driven at ,low speeds, IE; City driving.

Wait awhile, you haven't seen it go into "regen" when it's cold engine. It will blow white smoke out the tailpipe and you'll think it's on fire. Poor guy in the convertible next to me came up blowing his horn yelling "you're on fire". It was smoking so bad I couldn't even see him. Ford Customer Service says that's normal. My last Ford of any kind, period.

Rich,
Where did you get the EGT guage, and did you install it yourself? Are there places that specialize in this type of installation?
