Vent covers

2022 Montana HC 295RL: ordered and received from etrailer two vent covers for the stock Maxxfan-white model 4751KS that came with the new HC. Turns out the vent cover Maxxair II is slightly less than 10" so Maxxfan can NOT open fully. Following is the response from etrailer rep.

etrailer rep:
I have sent return information in a separate email for you to return the vent covers that do not work. Looking into the width and length you need we do not offer one that is 12" in height. These are designed to fit the 2015 and new MaxxFan and MaxxFan Plus roof vents, however it does state some vents may not open fully when used with this cover. If opened 50% or more the vents will still achieve max airflow.

FYI: wow

Depending on the vent and Maxxair cover the vent may not fully open inside the cover. I've read of lots of folks where that is the case. The vent and fan will operate just fine. My kitchen vent lid contacts my Maxxair cover before fully opening but it doesn't affect the performance.

Mine doesn't quite fully open, either. Not sure why they designed it that way but it continues to work just fine. I doubt there's any difference in the volume of air that is moved one way or the other.

I have the MaxxAir vent covers with the EZ clip.
Yes the vent lid does not open all the way. It hits the cover and stops.
That's normal operation.

My opinion: if power vent is stopped short of fully opening then there's got to be some stress put on the vent opening electric motor. Air flow may be fine but I've got to believe in a matter of time (who knows how long) the elect motor is going to malfunction and probably quit. Maybe, but I doubt it, there is some kind of overload switch like a garage door opener that when encountering something solid it will shut off.

I'll contact MaxxFan next week and try to get an answer.

thanks everyone for replies

Jack,

Many of us have used the covers without the lids fully opening for a few years and have not seen problems. If you are not comfortable, don't add them.

It's not the motor that will fail, the gear box will explode long before even thinking of the motor. The motor is designed to open until it hits resistance then it stops.

AZ: "don't add them" is not an option. Broken vents from previous campers due to hail after probably some UV degradation. Plus, being able to open vent in wind is a plus.

mhs4771: good to know the motor has some kind of resistance shut off-that makes sense.

First new camper since 2013; so trying to take care of it.

Our first ones did that from 2010 to 2017 with no problems and then our second set has done that from 2017 till the present and we full time so they get a lot of use. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had the same concern

I had the same concern when I first bought one of these covers. The Camping World Service Tech said it is normal for the lid to contact the cover and it also serves to stabilize it when traveling so the lid isn't being buffeted by the wind. Made sense to me so I have installed another and it works just fine. It's nice to be able to open it in the rain and get some ventilation.

We love our covers.

In fact we love them so much that the very first modification to
our new 3121RL Montana was two of them. Easy peasy installation
with the clips.

We had similar maxxair covers on our previous trailer (2010 Keystone
Cougar). We left the vents open 24/7/365 unless camping and needing
to retain heat. Certainly helped the ventilation in the trailer while stored.

Yes, the vent lid hits the top, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.
I would think that the manufacturers are aware of the lid hitting and
if it really was a big problem would make them a bit taller.

Let's face it campers the cover hits the ceiling, if there wasn't a fan cover the air flow would hit the roof of cover . I just don't see the difference.

I installed a Maxair high profile vent cover and my vent opens all the way...
