Santa Fe to Alamosa, CO to La Junta KOA

In July I plan on pulling Monty from Santa Fe, NM to Alamosa, CO via 285 and then to La Junta, CO KOA via 160. I’m interested to know if anyone has any comments or advice about this route? My rig works great in the mountains so not concerned about the elevation, just looking for input. Thanks in advance.

You will not have any problem on 285 or 160 to I-25. 160 crosses over North La Veta pass but that is not a bad one. And east bound is the easier direction as the east side of the pass is a little steeper than the west side.

I Haven’t been east of I-25 in that area.

It gets flat and stays flat east of I-25.

Not much to say or see on US 285 between Santa Fe and Alamosa. Antonito is the northern terminus for the Chama/Antonita narrow gauge railway. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is near Alamosa.

If you have a day to spare, the Cumbres & Toltec steam railroad is a great trip. Ride the train from Antonito to Chama and a bus back and slowly transition from high arid region up thru mountain passes and alpine valleys with a stop for lunch mid way. Alamosa has a fairly good KOA should you decide to stay over.

Great Sand Dunes NP is also a good side trip. Especially April to mid June when Medano Creek is running across the lower part of the dunes. But July is very hot there and the creek will be dried up.
