Corroded rim

I just returned from a 7 day trip. My tire pressure held up just fine to the destination 500 miles away. I stayed there for 6 days. When I started out for my return trip I saw I had lost 8 pds of pressure. I didn’t lose any additional pressure on the return trip. The RV sat in my driveway for 2 days and I lost 8 more pds of pressure.

I just picked up the repaired tire and was told by my trusted tire company that they repaired a corroded rim. I had never heard of that. The wheels on my RV
are 10 years old.

1. Is this common?
2. Is repairing a fairly routine and safe procedure?
3. Should I be looking into buying new rims?

Aluminum alloy wheels corrode. Especially if they are exposed to road salt or are chrome plated.

If your trusted tire shop knows what they are doing (or subcontracted to a wheel repair shop) you should be fine. I used to own a wheel repair shop (until I sold it and retired). I've personally successfully repaired thousands of corroded wheels.

Ejenkins - the folks that can help you will need to know the year and model of your RV.

Also you need to consider adding a tire monitoring system to monitor real time pressures and temps for tires on your RV and tow vehicle. I even have sensors on my spares.

I own a 2012 3150 Montana.

I do have a TMS installed which is how I knew I had lost pressure. That also allowed me to drive home knowing I wasn’t losing pressure while I drove.

I had a slow leak that was finally traced to a small crack in an aluminum wheel. It was welded and no more leak.
