Hurricane

Hi all. We're on the central coast of South Carolina as Ian approaches. It is forecast to hit as a category 1. Do we need to bring in our slides or does the wider rig make it more stable?

Seems to me like the wider rig has more potential to catch wind. I'd bring them in.

I’d have my wife bring them in as a hooked to my truck and leave. ASAP.

Besides wind catching the slides as well as the whole rig, the wind will be moving quite a bit of all kinds of destructive debris that can do serious damage to your rig and tow vehicle. I would be heading west as far as you can go to avoid serious damage to your equipment as well as your bodies.

Concur with Bob. Use the wheels on your rig to move west.

IF you cant move...
Bring your slides in, fill your freshwater tank, fill all your tanks if you know you are NOT in an area susceptible to flooding. This adds 1600lbs ballast to your rig.
We did this on our maiden voyage to SD. We survived 74mph straight line winds. We were sideways to the wind also. Very few trees in the Campground.
Now IF you are in an area which could have rising waters, do NOT fill your grey or black tanks.
AND disconnect your sewer hose.
I read of sewer water coming back up the pipe in Manatee Cove Famcamp at Patrick Space Force Base as the water flooded the Campground.

Our sons both evacuated during the hurricane. The oldest son’s in-laws put their slides in when they evacuated. Lots of good thoughts above. Here is an article with additional thoughts.

I whole heartedly agree

Head WEST as fast as you can, IMHO there is NO plan that is SAFE for riding out a hurricane in any RV! They are not designed for the stresses involved!

I’m currently in South Florida where we were spared by Hurricane Ian. However, I just got back from taking supplies to a family member who’s just a little north of Ft. Myers. Having lived through Hurricane Andrew (NOT IN AN RV) I can say that the devastation is surreal. We did pass by, from a distance, to what appeared to be a once campground. It was horrific! The only thing I can say is please leave! If you can hook up your rig and leave, please do so. If you can’t, take what you can, leave your rig behind and leave. DO NOT TRY TO WAIT A HURRICANE OUT IN AN RV. Please

^^This^^

It has wheels for a reason. That said if you can't leave definitely bring your slides in. Also check if you are under mandatory evacuation in your area. We bailed from Tampa on Sunday before the storm hit but the area we were in was under evacuation orders on Monday, and we would have had to go to a shelter if we'd stayed.

Hi! Full time Montana owner here!
My son has just been hired by Allstate, on a temporary basis, to do Insurance Damage Assessments in the Fort Myers area. Unfortunately, as part of the requirements for the assignment, he needs the following.
-He needs to rent, borrow or buy a 32' extension ladder.
-He needs to rent a room, in the Fort Myers area, for up to three months.
If u have any leads…can u let me know!
Thanks!

For future reference. In coastal Florida, keep an eye out for Tropical Storm Watches first. They usually come out about 4 days before anything big happens, but may develop.
If the Watch becomes a Tropical Storm warning, Counties will shut down all waterway land bridges when the wind speed reaches 40MPH.
If you are caught on the wrong side of a bridge then, you will have to ride out the storm even if it turns into a category 5 hurricane.
I don't know if coastal areas in other states have the same laws.
We lived on the Dade/Broward line in a townhouse during Andrew & stayed there through it. Never, ever again. It looked like Hiroshima just a few miles south of us.
We were in Panama City in our 5th Wheel as Hurricane Michael developed. We drove all the way to Biloxi to escape it as it built intensity.
The State Park that we left was evacuated & the 170 site Park was totally destroyed.
Don't mess around with tropical storms or hurricanes in an RV. Leave as soon as you can.

A couple of years ago we were in a CG in MS on the Gulf Coast trying to decide whether or not to leave due to a forecast hurricane to hit west of us. When we saw Jim Cantore land at the Gulfport Airport....we were gone within the hour.

Jim Cantore is an American meteorologist. He is best known as an on-air personality for The Weather Channel.

In all of my 70+ years, never heard of him. But then I spend very little time watching TV.

Excellent advice. When we were traveling north and south on the boat, we would enlist multiple weather sites to keep us informed on conditions. This one is free, and they send it every day via email, don't have to remember to look anything up. Marv's weather. During the tropical weather season, it's worth a look when tropical weather may be a concern.
