New Sailun Tire Issue

We are on our way to Alaska and stopped at Billings, Montana. I had a Sailun slip a belt before we left (using spare) and Arkware had a replacement for me. Planned on having it swapped along the way. Well, we pulled over for lunch and Ron noticed a separation above the bead with cords showing on door side rear. As soon as we arrived at Billings we had the tire looked at and decided that I had two tires requiring replacement (opposite side had a smaller slit in the same spot above the bead). These tires were new in 2021 and have about 25k miles on them. Well, Walmart had a week wait to get Sailunís, Big O is now asking $280/tire (and the closest is over 100 miles) and we need to keep moving. So, Discount Tire is going to put Hartland G series commercial All Steel 235 85R 16ís on this morning. I have always had good luck with Discount Tire and this is their house brand. The reviews look favorable for what I could find. They have a similar actual weight and their specs are similar or better than my two preferred tires - Sailun or G614ís. Surprisingly, Discount didnít carry the G614 (at least not in Montana). Keep an eye out for tire slits above the bead. These are the trailing tires, so they probably get more sidewall stress.

Ron, were these made in China or the newer ones from the Vietnam plant?
Reason I asked is that I had to replace all 4 of mine and got the newer Vietnam ones on now.

These were the OEM from April 2021. They were made in China. 3 out of 4 had issues. In Montana, the ranches know what works on trailers and they have had good luck with the Hartland. If I didn’t want to be stuck for a week, it was my best choice. Will report back after Alaska.

Sorry to hear about your tire issues Ron. Well where you are headed will absolutely be a proof test for the Hartland brand from.DT. We'll be following your blog for updates. Good luck and safe travels.

Thanks, Lee. I was really impressed that they actually knew how to change tires properly - hand start lugs, cross tighten. Hand torque wrench. Tomorrow for our first test. Will be watching TST closely. Especially temps.

Well, where you are going you won't be heating up the tires from driving too fast! No freeways the rest of the way for you....

We drove up twice and had no tire issues either time.

Tho, darn frost heaves got me. First one I hit they had marked with orange flag (used a LOT). Hardly felt it. So next one I see, I went over it at 40 mph. Ouch. Never know when to go 25 and when to go 40.
Are you going to go over the 'Top of World' highway? An experience in itself!

Yes, doing the Top of the World Highway. The IS should help with the frost heaves.

Loved the chicken pot pie last time. Huge pans of it.

I use Discount Tires for my truck. Never thought about tires for the 5th wheel there.
I have a 2021 40ft with 18,000 on it. Better start looking.
Please let me know how you like them.

Hartland Tires

I bought 2 Hartland G series 235/85R 16's 4.5 years ago at Discount Tire when I was looking for something cheaper than the Michelin XPS Rib tires that I had been using. My Montana is older and lighter, 12,100 lbs max, with 6 lug alloy wheels rated at 80 psi. I have not had any problem with the Hartland (made in China) tires run at 80 psi or the 2 Sailuns that I also run at 80 psi.

So far, it’s early, but tires are staying consistent on temp and pressure. Running under 30 deg C (about 86 F). A longtime member suggested setting temp in C so the numbers are drastically different at a glance. Otherwise temp and pressure are very similar).

How do your tires run so cool? 86 degrees? Hell mine are 90 just sitting still in the sun. Running around 125 on the highway.

When it’s in the 30’s to 50’s on the way to Alaska it’s easier. We are just now going into the 70’s. A few days they started at 0 C.

Had some problems with the G614's last fall and also had some spring problems to we replaced the springs (YA, YA, no IS on this unit) and we put on heavier springs. I tried to get the G614s again but it was going to be 2-3 weeks and the Sailun's were even longer to we went with the Hercules that the tire guy suggested and have had no problems with them what so ever. Went from Nebraska to Arizona to Missouri and back to Nebraska this last winter and returned this spring and the tires don't even look like they have any miles on them. We'll see how things go from here. "To the two Ron's and their better halves, safe travels and see you in Goshen in September!" from the third Ron in the bunch!

Just had 4 new Sailun 637s installed (on rims, I mounted on trailer) and balanced for $741. Saw an earlier post that a dealer wanted $280 per tire? Don't go there.
