Best Route to the Redwoods

We are planning a trip to the Redwoods next week from Palmdale, CA to Cresent City, CA. Looks like I have a couple of route choices.

1. I-5N to the I-580W to the US-101N. How is the drive taking the I-580W thru San Francisco/Oakland? And how is the US-101 north to Cresent City.

2. The I-5N to Redding and cutting across the mountains on the 299W, then up the US-101N.

Anyone taken either of the routes and how are they pulling their Montana?
