how to remove ac cold air vents

I am trying to check air flow restriction and need to remove the cold air inlet vents on a 2014 Moodel 3735MK. They look like theycan be pried off but not sure. Ideas? Figure for once, I will ask first before destroying them.

If your ac outlets have three indentations spaced around the cover, you can insert a flat screwdriver, stiff putty knife or whatever near each indent to release the cover. Usually takes two of the three released to pop off the cover. Yes, it takes some force.

Thanks, also appreciate the photo as I was about to pry near the indentations.

Once you get the cover off and the vent out of the duct cut off about an inch of the tube running up into the duct and use metal duct tape to seal the edges of the ceiling to the air duct. This will eliminate the air going in between the duct and the ceiling and into the space called the attic.

Dave-- Update on my post--I see you were talking about the intake vents and not the exhaust vents. Removal of the intake vents is very similar to the outlet vents. Once off, I put a small block of wood up in the ceiling where the screws that hold the main from of the intake vents and they are solidly up against the ceiling now since the screws were just into the fiber ceiling. I also taped that area and took a mirror and flashlight to see if the inlet ducting was collapsed or not. One of mine was and I used the PVC tubing to correct that problem. I also went to the hardware store and purchased additional foam filtering for A/Cs and cut several additional spare filters to replace or exchange with the ones in the inlet vents.

I have always just inserted a tool between the two pieces near the indent to pop it loose. But whatever works, works. And yes, the part remaining in the ceiling will probably be a stock part that sticks way too far into the small duct. And the duct will more than likely be taped crappy so that cold air goes into the attic. All of mine were.

Just Took My Air Vents Out Entirely

In my 2018 3950BR 5-ver I took all my ceiling air vents off to increase A/C flow. It helped a lot. And nobody yet has come to visit and said "OMG where are your ceiling air vents?" haha. Just be careful taking them out as they are only plastic and could break...good luck!

Taking the vents off, did it really make a noticable difference? They don't seem substantial enough to impede air flow but if it helps I'm game. It's hot here in SC and anything to help the AC is welcome.

I pulled the air filters to clean them and noticed more flow so now I leave them out. Frankly I don’t clean them often enough anyway.

Not a good idea, that will allow the return air coil to become dirty and reduce air flow and lower it's cooling capacity. Then you will be up on the roof cleaning it, not fun when it's hot out.

I'm sure you'll notice a difference...it did for me. Hope it helps!
