Propane Furnace
Good morning all.
I am getting a ton heat blasted outside at the furnace vent, way more than what is going inside. You can't stand in front of it. Normal? Thanks in advance!

I'm sad to say that this is pretty much normal. These furnaces aren't very efficient.

Yes, normal, I wish they would make a energy efficient model, but they don't as of this date.

Come on Keystone, why don't you have an energy efficient furnace in your units by now? What is the holdup? You must be waiting for SOB to do it first! From my understanding, homes built nowadays and any existing homes that need new furnaces can only install energy efficient furnaces. They are not much more expensive and save a ton of fuel, not that you don't already know that. When I go fulltime I don't plan on spending a lot of time in cold weather but when I do I don't want to spend all my retirement heating the FW. You have a couple more years to start putting them in before I buy so get it together. I am sure that at the rallies that members speak of this is a topic of discussion and I know I'm not the first.

Wonder how much a energy efficient furnace would add to the cost of the RV. Does any manufacturer make one???? Is it a space issue as well???

If stick and brick homes is any indication, high efficiency furnaces would cost a couple grand extra.
BTW: here's an interesting read on different kinds of RV heat sources: http://www.damouth.org/RVStuff/PortHeat.shtml

Thanks Tom, that's an interesting article. I wonder if anyone actually makes an efficient propane replacement furnace.

We HAD a 4' level that was made of plastic. We left it standing next to the door by the heater exhaust. The exhaust was hot enough to melt the plastic!

Used to tailgate at football games and one game I went to bed early. DW thought she would help me and cleaned up before she turned in. Well, she took the folding table and moved it under the awning and against the side of the trailer. During the night it got cold enough to have the furnace turn on. When I went outside in the morning the plastic table top melted where the exhaust blew on it. Its gets very hot.
I would estimate the efficiency of current units at 60%. Surely they can do better.

They can but won't untill pushed, maybe hard.
Part of the problem is the furnace mfgr. but of course rv builders like keystone could help them make
the decision to get off their hands.

Thanks all, thats what I thought. Just wishing I didn't know of something new. Went thru 1.5 tanks in 4 days last week. Always run out at about 2:30AM.

I have a Manchester aluminum propane tank for my second tank. I changed to that tank because it can be ordered with a true level gage that connects to a meter inside the Monty. Now i know the amount left in the second tank at all times. Not cheap, but it paid for itself one night when I was in the hospital and my wife called to tell me that the heater was not working. An easy diagnosis and a helpful campground owner had the heat problem fixed in no time.
