Tire Wear

Hi All, my 2020 3120RL came with Sailun tires. Picture below. After less than 10,000 miles, it was pointed out that I should be concerned with the wear that is occurring. Pictures attached. Tires are running at the recommended 110psi. Does anyone have a feel for what is happening to cause this wear, and if so, what would be recommended for follow up? Should I be concerned at this time as I need to return home and will go another 2000 miles when I do.

Tire wear

My 2019 42’ Alpine had wear like that at about the same mileage you have. First thing I did was swap the tire to the other axle. I made an appt with a local shop that specializes in axle alignment for trailers and commercial vehicles. Cost be $500, the shop owner said it was of the more difficult axle repairs he’s done. I replaced the tires on both axles and after 2K miles, the nubs on the tread from the mfg process are disappearing evenly as the tires wear.

I have a 2019. My tires look about like that.
27,330 miles on them.
Question...
Did you put that spray foam in the joint in your wheel wells or did it come like that from the factory?

I have over 30K on my Sailuns and the edge wear is normal. It is due to the turning/scrubbing action on turns. There is a ton of "meat" on the edges to allow for this behavior.

Rotating the worn tires will buy some time. If you have done a lot of sharp turns that wear could be normal. A reputable shop will charge about 200-300 dollars. It's a simple procedure for an experienced semi truck alignment shop.

A few years ago this was a big concern. The tires are wearing the same as they were then but the concern has faded. Refer to Carl post 4.

If it was my fifth wheel trailer I would have a trailer shop align the axles and then replace the tire. The link to this video shows how this trailer owner adjusted his trailer's axles.

I wouldn't be overly concerned. It appears you have a slight mis-alignment that could be adjusted at a spring shop.

That appears to be a slight mis-alignment that could easily be adjusted at a spring shop.

The foam was my attempt to stop mice and squirrels. It has been an ongoing project. I am still finding holes to fill.

Thanks for all of your thoughts. I will return home and have the alignment done just to be sure.

I agree with Carl, it looks like normal wear, it all depends on how you back in and how much weight you have on the axles.

As far as replacing your tires, I don't think that's necessary. You still have good tread left on those tires, as indicated by the grove depth, even on the outside groves.

But, taking the trailer in for an alignment is a good thing, because you definitely have something going on, that if it continues WILL prematurely wear in one spot too much. Your tread depth is still good. No reason to change them .... yet.

As stated above, when backing in, if you have a lot of side skidding on the tires, it does not take much to wear down what you are seeing.

Question? Is this wear happing on all the tires, or just the one?

First, if you have 10K miles on these tires, and need to go 2K to finish the trip, I'd say you are in good shape. The tread in the photos shows very little wear except the one edge, but it is still in good shape. Plenty of meat left, and minimal wear in the sipes part of the tread.
With 10K on these tires, yours are wearing better than most of us experience!

American interstate highways are probably at the heart of the problem. See if you can find someone in your area that does trailer axle alignment. and have them check everything out.

I also had wear on out side and inside of all four tires, took to tire shop and was told that the wear was normal due to scrubbing tire while making tight turns and backing. Now I just watch them and drive on.

Tire Wear

We have the same yr and model with a like number of miles. That picture could have been from mine. I have been watching and wondering the same. Thanks for the question and all of your responses have been helpful. Safe Travels All.
