Electrical Surge Protection
Hi everyone, I was curious what type of surge protection is used the most? Plug in protection or wired in EMS?

Given the level of clean 120V power needs in these new rigs, and the occasional voltage drop in some of the older campgrounds we have stayed at, we decided to go all out and acquire the Hughes Autoformers RV220-50SP Voltage Booster (with Surge Protection). Got it on sale at a more favorable price, so the delta $ to the surge protector we were looking at was a little more palatable. Plus, in this unit the surge protector is user-replaceable at very low expense, whereas you have to discard the others should they do their job just that once. And, yes, we were/are aware of the "controversy" regarding power boosters but we do believe Hughes' published arguments regarding their technology and why those concerns do not apply to their unit.

Hardwire - like the ability to have the performance visible without blue tooth stuff

The first two rigs we had I did the hardwired. I'm sure the next owners are enjoying those. From then on I have had the plug in type. I have never had one stolen nor have I ever heard of or talked to anyone who has experienced that type of theft.

Thanks everyone for the info! I purchased a Southwire 50 amp surge protection (wired) with the digital remote for my 2021 Montana HC 295RL. Did anyone install themselves? Or have dealer or electrician install?

Plug-in Hughes Autoformer EMS for us and I works great. I can even monitor from my cell phone if needed.

I use a 30 and 50 amp plug in surge protectors.

I put in a hard wired Progressive and installed a remote reader on the stair steps going to the front room, that allows me to read it from inside or just opening the front door from outside.

My Montana came with one hardwired from factory (legacy). However, I realize it's redundancy, but I actually use both. I use the plug in one to scan the pedestal to make sure it's wired correctly. I did this before even thinking of plugging in my rig. If it's good, then I plug in. That's just me.

Hardwired Surge Guard in ours and its saved us several times from faulty pedestals, no grounds and low voltage, 90v on one leg. Would never plug in anywhere without some protection.

Hardwired Progressive 50amp EMS in both units. No concerns about theft. Dealer installed at purchase.
Be careful with surge protectors as they may not protect against low voltage, which (as I understand it) can be a huge risk for your electronics.
A few weeks ago my EMS triggered and cut power. Turns out we were only getting 104 volts on one bus and 105 on the other. That alone made me feel like this was money well spent.
(The facility manager confirmed the low voltage and "something" was done the next day which fixed it.)
