Angry South Dakota Domicile

We are registered to vote in South Dakota. Don't live there, just get mail, register vehicles, do taxes, etc in Sioux Falls. So I got a jury summons because of the voter registration and they are refusing to excuse me. Will be in Alabama at that time. I have asked for travel and lodging to be reimbursed for the MONTH they want (will see ha ha). Anyway, I am seriously considering just withdrawing my voter registration and not voting. Many states connect jury duty to voter registration which is plain wrong.

I just looked it up, and I think being called for jury duty may also be tied to having a SD driver's license and address.

Paul,

Many places will not require you to serve on a jury if you are over a certain age.

Well your signature says you are from Colorado but you say everything is registered in South Dakota. For those that are not aware South Dakota does not have any income tax. Are you spending more than 6 months a year in Colorado?

Last time I received a jury summons (2022), there was a box to check that allowed you to be excused if over 70 years of age. Before writing this response, I googled voting age exemption and it stated over the age of 75. There seems to universally be a provision for exemption based on age. Check your source for credibility. Personally I’d trust information from your state’s registrar.

I think you should consider serving for jury duty in SD. I’m sure it would be enlightening.

Just tell them you're racist or you already know he/she is guilty, that should be enough to get you excused .

IMHO, you are benefitting from the SD domicile... many full timers do. Short of them excusing you, I think you owe it to them to fulfill your obligation.

I have been called twice in my state. I always tell them I am happy to serve but that I drive for a living so I will need plenty of notice so I can be sure I am around when they require me. Both occasions they excused me and told me to disregard the summons.

Kind of bummed me out! I would love to be involved in the process.

We fulltlimed for 7 years with SD residency. If you are a legitimate full timer, SD will excuse you from Jury Duty. Just explain that to the Court Clerk.

Serving, requires a person to be on call for a 'possible' trial for a period of a month. Not a specific date. At least that is how the summons reads. A month in Sioux Falls would be at my expense, only mileage reimbursed from the PMB address to the court (less than a mile). Jury commissioner refused to excuse even though we are in Alabama and it's a long way back to SD. SD recently change the laws pertaining to jury duty and being a full time RV'er does not matter and I am not 75+ yet.

Been called for jury many times. One was for a child-molester case and the defense atty dumped me quick because of young kids at home then.

My sig says I am FROM Colorado true and I am a Colorado native. Gotta be from somewhere.

This reminds me somewhat of an adult millennial kid still living with their parents and complaining about the WIFI being out.

You have obviously dodged taxes and saved $ in other ways by claiming to be a resident. Pay the piper now; go do your civic duty.

I am closing this thread to prevent further personal confrontation.
