How to replace microwave

Not sure if every rig is the same, but my microwave is hung from the cabinet above by (I think) 2 bolts. Is that all there is to it? Also, if I buy another unit that fits in the space, do all microwaves have brackets that would mount from above like this??

Also, I assume I would need some muscle helper to hold the thing in place while tightening the bolts.

Any advice would be greatly appeciated.

No, those bolts are not all there is. The microwave is mounted via a mounting plate that is on the back wall as well. You will need to build a platform that sits on the stove or whatever is below your microwave to support it as you remove those bolts into the cabinet above as well as support the new one for its install. The replacement should come with a new wall bracket as well. Not a bad project except finding a new one to fit the spot of the old one.

I have replaced three times over the years. At least with Whirlpools, I was able to use the existing wall mount each time. Simply set the vent, the wall mount is a hook setup, drop the back of the microwave onto the mount, swing up, and there are two bolts through the cabinet into the top of the microwave. On one install, I did have to drill holes as the existing ones did not match up. MWs for the most part come in standard sizes, and I had no problems finding one that fit.

My microwave is 1.5 cubic feet, I think. I searched the net and found 2 rv parts companies. I don't think there was a single 1.5 cf unit. Almost all were 1.1 and ALL were out of stock!!!!! Also, my unit is 30 inches wide and the ones above were 24 inches or smaller!!!

Do standard microwaves from a store fit??? Thanks

I replaced our 30 inch microwave a couple years ago with a standard residential microwave I purchased at BestBuy, and other than drilling a couple new holes in the cabinet and installing the new mounting plate on the wall, the installation went fine. The cu ft measurement is strictly how they are designed inside, and the new unit we installed actually has more room inside than the old one. The original unit was a microwave/convection oven and we went with a microwave only unit and it has more power than the combination oven had.

The microwave we installed is a Samsung, and this was in March of 2020.

When we replaced ours, we used leveling blocks to hold it up during removal/installation.

They are standard Over the range microwaves. They are all 30” find one that’s about the same height and you’ll be fine. The cubic foot is the interior size not the overall size. You can get one at Home Depot or lowes or wherever. The only issue is the bracket on the back wall might need to be replaced and the holes in the cabinet might need to be drilled in a different location. Other than that it take less than 45 min to swap and you don’t need to build anything to hold it. They aren’t that heavy.

I’m considering a MW replacement too…how does the vent hook up? Do all vented MWs have the vent in the same spot, to line up with the existing RV vent hole?

Thanks in advance!

Normally the vents are in the same place right in the center.

Even with our original MW, the exhaust did not line up exactly with the vent through the wall, and when I installed the new unit, the exhaust lined up off center with the vent to the outside, but I did not mess with trying to move anything, it worked OK before and still does with the new unit. The new MW was set up to exhaust to the top of the unit, but there was instructions how to change the exhaust to the back.

After more research, my old unit was 15 3/4 inches high. The stove cover folds up and clears by about 3/4 to 7/8 inch. So the max height microwave I can use is around 16 1/4 or MAYBE 16 3/8. Only a few models are this size, but I am looking at HomeDepot or BestBuy 1000 miles from here where I am also replacing my A/C!!
Waiting for the dealer to get back if they will go pick it up if I order it online.

Thanks to all who offered help here.

We replaced our 2006 microwave/convestion oven last week. I don't know when Keystone switched to home microwave ovens--30 inches wide. Ours was limited to about 21 inches. Still able to get a smaller microwave--Furrion--via Texas RV Supply in San Antonio. The original simply sat on a shelf above the vent-a-hood/stove. A few screws and it came out--weighs about 45 lbs! New one sat on the same shelf and attached to the front--yes it took a little rigging to secure it--but got it done--and then plugged it in. Works great. Ready for a great summer--also got plank flooring!
