Battery connection

Feeling foolish at having to ask this.
I removed the battery from our 2005 Montana 5ver three years ago. The model escapes me but it is in the 35 foot range, with a generator and 4 slides. When I recently went to reinstall the battery, after a couple of years, I encountered a case of brain fog, one of the perks of getting older I guess , and cannot recall exactly how it is hooked up. It has only one battery, a heavy gauge red wire that has a black sleeve at the end, a smaller gauge red wire, a heavy gauge black wire, and finally the white ground wire.

I had read on here that back in 2005 the wiring was per a brick and mortar home, but I am apprehensive of hooking things up incorrectly. I have the heavy gauge red/black wire, and the smaller gauge red wire on the positive terminal, the white is connected to the negative. Am I correct that the heavy gauge black wire will also go to positive, as it would in a brick and mortar home?

I would include a photo but I am not familiar with how to.

I would say that the heavy Black would also go on the negative as it should be the ground wire from the Generator. You should be able to follow that Black wire and see if indeed it's connected to the ground on the Generator provide it's a built-in OEM Generator.

Take the heavy gauge black wire and follow it back to the other end.
Im guessing its the chassis ground.
If you find it bolted to the wall/frame, its definately the ground (negative).

If all else fails, one my try using a multimeter to do continuity checks from the end of the cables to know good, clean ground connection on the frame. I suspect one would read 1 to 2 ohms or less. At least this would hopefully indicate your ground wires...

Battery connection

In a brick and mortar home black would be a hot lead, and not a ground. As I stated in the original post I ad somewhere on the forum that in 2005 Montanas were wired like a house, something that was changed around 2018 to auto style wiring. I do not want to fry anything in the unit. See attached photo.

Battery reconnect

On the 2005 models, open the front hatch and face the battery. Look up. There should be a picture right there showing how to hook up the battery. If you do it backwards, it will blow the converter, as they didn't have reverse polarity protection back then. Don't ask how I know that, lol.

On my 2006 the only lead on the negative battery terminal is the white wire going to a chassis ground. You are going to have to identify where that black wire goes before hooking it up or suffer the consequences if wrong.

An ohm meter will go a long way to help. Black wire to ground would be a dead short.
