Brakes When to replace?

Hello,
I have a 2010 295 RK Mountaineer, We are the Original Owners.

I Pack my own bearings over the years, started every other, now I do every 3 Years.

That being said,
How long do the Brakes Last, as I have the Self Adjusting 6K Axles?
I took Pictures of my Brakes 3 years ago, when I packed the bearings, they still had "Meat" on them.

Most of my Travels is the Freeway, pulling with my 2005 Chev. Dually Diesel, so I use the Allison for Braking when I'm driving, Bride does drive some mostly on the Freeway, just to spell me.

Bottom Line

When do Folks replace their Brakes on their Rigs, it is 12 years old?

Do not want to pull the Hubs to repack, and find the Linings too far gone.
I can get the Replacements just have to order them.

Big time Reader, Not much of a Poster.
Thx,

Barman54

If you do decide to be proactive and replace the brakes, I would suggest getting the entire backing plate brake assembly that has the shoes and magnets already installed. It costs very little more than the individual components and all the parts will be new, just have to make a couple splices at each wheel. If the drums look like they aren't quite true, including the armature surface that the magnets contact, you should have them turned, and you might have to hunt down a shop that can turn the armature surface as well as the braking surface, because most automotive shops aren't set up to turn the armature surface. Good luck with your project.

Thanks Rohrmann for the advise.

That is the best way to go, replacing the Unit as a whole, Messing with Brake Springs are not fun.

Also, after several times of repacking, the clip holding the Magnet can break when you remove the drum, so always have replacements Prior.

Mine are 6K axles so they use a white wire, 7K have Black Wires

Everybody's driving styles vary. With 88K miles I'm still running the original brakes on my 2006 Montana 3000RK. Got a great deal on 4 backing plate brake assemblies probably 10 years ago and they have been in my garage or the belly of the 5'er ever since. I inspect the originals every year and will replace when needed, but with most the 88K miles being highway or rural the brakes just don't get used much. Rohrman makes a great point about having both faces of the drums turned. The local shop that use to do both faces is out of business so I need to search out a new shop or just buy new drums when the time comes to replace.
