Tonneau cover susgestion

hello all,

We are getting closer in purchasing our Montana. We've been taking small steps so far. We recently sold our F150 and will be picking up our 2017 F350 supercab diesel tomorrow.

This vehicle will be parked outside. As a means to protect the fifth wheel hitch in the truck bed, we are wanting to purchase a tonneau cover. Of what is out there, I like the roll up covers.nthis still will work better for us as when not pulling the fifth wheel, we will be carrying a few kayaks in the bed.

With so many manufactures out there, do you have any recommendations? The American EZ roll tonneau cover looks like it should work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

We have the Truxedo LoPro reason I like it is it only sits 3/4” above bed rails. It has a flat black finish, easily installed no holes to drill. We carry a toolbox in the bed and rolls nice and tight to the cab allowing lid to open fully. Around $500

Truxedo Edge has worked well for us.

Thanks for your reccomdations. It appears that most of these are similar. Prices go up based on the extent of the warranty and ease of adjustment. I like the Lo Pro as it doesn't sit that tall

autoanything.com Extang roll up. Water proof and when rolled up you lose very little bed space, unlike fold ups.

We’ve used a Gator for the last few years and it’s worked well.

I have the American roll-up cover and it works and looks great! Realtruck.com usually has the best pricing for American covers. Something that must be considered is the how far the Tonneau cover mounting rail extension protrudes into the bed area. Some pin boxes will hit the cover mounting rails during sharp turns. Because I use an Andersen hitch with the box ball socket mounted forward of the king pin (extending the pin box), I have to be very careful (1/2") clearance of pin box during sharp turns. If I had to do it all over again, I would go with an American flip top tri-fold Tonneau cover. A tri or quad fold cover would be the best option for those with not much pin box clearance to side of bed. There are no bed mounting rails required on most top mount tri fold tonneau covers.

I have a GMC long bed and have the GM trifold cover. It stays covered when not towing to keep my firewood nice and dry between trips and when camping. I can fold and unfold in a matter of seconds. If I need it, I put the blue boy on top and strap it down. Plenty of room between it and the hitch while towing. Best part is I bought two of them used off craigslist for $100. Best $100 buck I ever spent.

Thanks everyone. The feedback on how far the rails will extend the box is great. Our thinking for the roll up is when we have kayaks in the bed, the roll up won't affect our visibility from the rear window.

Plan to pick up the truck later today! Followed with looking at some roll up covers at a nearby dealer. With the ease of installation I will be ordering the roll up on line, once I make that decision

Fiberglass BakFlip. Folds all the way up for full bed access, can travel with it folded down to cover the stuff closest to the bed, and still clear the hitch and trailer.

Thanks. I’m leaning towards the Tuxedo Pro X15. The truck is too big to fit into our garage and the cover won’t require any maintenance. I went to a local RV parts store and offers it for less than on line with installation included.

We picked up the F350 Lariet diesel today so the cover is next.

Thanks everyone

CPat, Congrats on the new truck! Be sure to measure the length of your 5'er pin box (center of pin to rear) and compare to the total inside bed width (between the Pro X15 bed mount rails) and divided by two. If cover mounting rails allow for 2 or more inches of pin box clearance (during sharp turns) you'll be fine. The Tuxedo Pro X15 looks like a good cover!

Thank you. It’s an 8’ box with a 164” Wheel base so hopefully I will be good. More updates later as we plan to go look at fifth wheels this weekend.

good price and quality

get a flush tool box, i.e UWS box. do not waste your money on a cheap Lund box.

I live in snow country so I have a Truxedo Sentry, hard roll-up cover. Up side, cannot get into truck bed by cutting cover with a knife, down side, I can't see my hitch when I hook up when it's rolled up behind the cab. I've learned to hitch up without seeing the hitch the same as semi drivers.

Very happy with my Lopro. Be sure to keep your receipt. My first one deteriorated after 10 years (the Velcro quit holding) they would have replaced with their warranty but I had no receipt, having bought it while living in Canada.
Then after 10 years, while driving through Montana a big side gust of wind tore it off, but my insurance replaced it. All things work together....

I tried a trifold and the seams leaked with our PNW rains And besides that, since I have a short bed and a moride hitch I did not have room to use the cover while towing.
Thankfully the refunded the purchase price.
