after market engine brake for 6.7 Cummins
We have a 2003 Dodge 2500 that we have kept in very good condition. Last year we bought a 3160RL, which is a bit heavier than our previous 5er. The added weight presents more need for better braking on long downhills. Hence, I am considering adding an aftermarket engine/exhaust brake.
Anyone have experience with such an addition?

We added a Pacbrake to our 2006 Dodge 2500 automatic. It is great and no problem in the Rocky Mountains. It was expensive, but worth every penny.

I had a Pacbrake on my old truck. Sometimes going down hills I had to give it gas, as it slowed me way down.
Banks makes exhaust brakes also.

Dodge didn't make a 6.7L in 2003...it was a 5.9L...or did you mean a 2013 truck? Either way, a 3160 RL has a GW of around 16k. If I was in your shoes, I'd be looking for an eng/exhaust brake that is in a different truck, that 2500 is way over weight.

Yes, it is 5.9.
We travel very light with our 3160, under 13,000 pounds. This is our second full summer and no problems. Not ready to spend $70,000 on a new tow vehicle.
It is automatic.

Dodge didn't offer a exhaust brake with a auto trans. till 2006 when they beefed up the trans. But all after market ebs recommend a trans.upgrade. Go to B&D services to see what I mean.

Thanks for the response.
We upgraded the transmission to 2014 specs year before last.

I installed a PacBrake PRXB on my 2007 5.9 and it worked flawlessly for 5 years and I traded trucks. Added benefit of PacBrake is that it is air operated and therefore provides onboard air for other uses.

I once owned a 2005 and added a Pac Brake that worked very well, but the pre 2006 transmissions were not designed for it, my question it was upgraded to 2014 specs, your transmission is either a 47re, or a 48re, the last transmission was the 48re in 2006 a 4 speed overdrive, in 2007 they went to the 6 speed trans, so the question what did your trans have done to it to upgrade it, for the exhaust brake it has to have different electronics, the front bearing is changed as is the torque converter, so I would talk to the people who did it and verify it is up to standards or you will be replacing it soon after you add the exhaust brake

Good comments.
We replaced the transmission and torque converter with a rebuilt unit built to 2014 standards. I will confer with the rebuilder to affirm the specs.

Off topic, but worth pointing out ... Some on the MOC are a bit anal about maximum loaded trailer weight when talking trucks. Many of us never come close to GVRW of our fivers and dfryk is a testament to that fact. Don't assume we all carry everything we own including the stick house kitchen sink.

I love the exhaust brake on are 2008 Dodge 3500 DRW I don't think I would tow are
fiver with out it. But adding it to an older dodge you need to do rework the trans so
it can take the abuse or you will be leaving on the Highway some wears when it comes
apart they didn't have the best trans I had an 06 and put two trans in it under 80,000
mil's.

Actually the 2007 Rams were the 5.9 CTD with a 48re transmission. Mid year (2007 1/2) the 6.7 CTD came out with the 6 speed transmission. They were both on the dealer's lot when I was shopping for a new truck and I opted for the 2007 5.9 CTD and added the PacBrake PRXB which worked great for 5 years until I traded trucks.
