Nuts!!
What is the difference between a 1/2-20 lug nut 7/8" from a 1/2-20 3/4"? Had new rims, tires, and lug nuts installed; when I went to re-torque the lug nuts for an upcoming trip I found my 7/8" socket didn't fit. I found that they were 3/4". Called up the tire shop (Les Schwab) and I was told seat, strength, and torque were the same.

Perhaps your new wheels have smaller lug holes drilled in them that a 7/8" socket wouldn't fit down in?????????????

That would be my guess also.

1/8" is a reasonable answer

The size of the lug nut does not change the torque on the stud and threads.

Some lug nuts have a chrome cap over them. Maybe the 3/4" nuts are sized so a cover brings them up to 7/8".

I believe the caps you are referring to are stainless, not chrome, and are a lot thinner than 1/16"

Hi
If the lug stud is the same size as the original ones then there would not be any difference in the torque or capacity of the assembly.
According to the specifications published by several manufacturers the lug stud ½ diameter and 20 thread pitch for both the lug nuts that use a 7/8 wrench and the ones that use a ¾ wrench.
I would say it is most probable that the dealer just purchased from the local parts store instead from a specialty store and the nuts serve the same purpose.

Only thing I can think of is that there will be less contact area between the lug nut and your wheel. I've no idea if this means much of anything, but I'd contact the manufacturer of the wheels to find out if it does.

Hi
According to the specifications the area of the taper that centers the lug hole on the lug stud and contacts the wheel is the same dimensions on both nuts.

There isn’t any reason to worry that’s why the OP asks the question to find out.
