Surgery Tomorrow
Headed for surgery tomorrow...first of three. It'll be an electronic implant, on trial...they'll remove it next thursday. If the evaluation goes well, they'll do a permanent implant in about 30 days. Been waiting since last August for this...keep your fingers crossed for me !
I hope to be right back on here...'cause, I got a lot more to learn !
Bill

Talk to the nurses about cooking, they, (we) all like to eat well.

Best of luck. My neighbor had an implant for back pain. They first implanted it on his hip; looked like he always had a can of Skoal. He then had it moved around to his stomach area, above the belt line; worked out much better.

thanks for all the prayers and well wishes. surgery went ok. they'll take the implant back out next thursday, and we'll decide from there if we go forward with the permanent one. I've had rsd for over a year now, and this is pretty much my last resort.
thanks again.

yeah, rsd...like art n marge said, wicked stuff. I'm gonna post the below info not looking for pity, but rather to help make people aware of this disease that most don't know about....so bear with the long post please.
It's uncurable, best that can be hoped for is to control pain, and sometimes it goes into a type of remission. heck, it wasn't long ago some docs were amputating the appendage affected. It's Reflex Sympathetic Distrophy, sometimes referred to as crps. The cause is a "traumatic event"...broken bone, even a severe sprain. It's your sympathetic nerve system gone wild, with a mind of it's own. In my case, it began with simply a dislocated thumb...bent it back all the way against the forearm. that was july of 2007. Had an implant put into the joint, body rejected it about a month later. They took out the implant, then cut a piece of tendon, wrapped into a ball and place it there. About a week before the cast came off, my hand/forearm started getting hot...and i mean HOT. When they cut off the cast, all heck broke loose. Been downhill from there...and that was 1 year, 2 months and 17 days ago. I'm a redhead, with blondish hair on my arms...this rsd turned the hair on my hand/forearm jet black. when it's cold out, the area turns red hot...when they tried to do therapy on it by dipping it in warm water, it instantly turns purple blue and gets huge goose bumps on it. you cannnot touch the area...even a light breeze over it causes intense pain. my finger nail growth is out of control on that hand and my fingers (actually my thumb) has begun to deform as the rsd attacks the bone structure. I have been taking 64 pills a day trying to control it. it can spread, even "mirroring" to the opposite extremity. I am at stage 3..of 4. many with this condition cannot take the pain and even commit suicide...ain't gonna happen to me. some are even wheelchair and/or house bound. installing a pain pump is an option, but not for me i think. some have had successful treatment by going overseas and been put into a chemically induced comma then get massive doses of ketamine 24/7 for a week. If you don't know what ketamine is, google it especially to DEA...it's apparently a street drug known as "special k"..it's in, I believe, extacy (sp), lsd and others...again, not for me.
So that's it kinda in a nutshell...sorry for the long post, but little is known about it and the more the public is informed the better I think. Again, not looking for sympathy...just making people aware any chance i get. Mine is in my dominant hand, and as a custom cabinet maker...well, you get the pic !
So, we'll hope for the best and look forward to meeting everyone out there soon !
Bill
